1715 Battle of Preston Fought within the confines of the town itself, the Jacobites mounted a spirited defence successfully repelling the first assaults on their lines. However, as more Government troops arrived they had little choice but to surrender. Alexander Davidson I, fighting to restore Scottish independence, he does not survive the battle of Preston, we don’t know if he died fighting or he died during British imprisonment. (see Battle of Preston addendum) Some of the Highland Scots captured are sentenced to be executed for treason. However, we do know that his brothers William and Andrew are taken as prisoners.. The Highland clansmen were defeated at the Battle of Preston, 639 of the remaining 1,301 prisoners are exiled to America. 1717Two shiploads of the Scottish Jacobites are sent sailing on ships called the Friendship of Belfast and Good Speed to Maryland and Virginia as indentured servants. William and Andrew, brothers of Alexander Davidson with 80 additional Jacobite prisoners are on board the Friendship of Belfast. As indentured servants they must submit to seven years service. William Davidson becomes an indentured servant to Mordecai Moore, a fellow Scotsman, while Andrew serves his seven years to Francis Bullock, also a Scotsman. Both are serving in Gloucester County, Virginia.
1727 - Ten years later with hope of a better life, the sons of deceased Alexander Davidson I and Sarah McDavid, and the nephews of William and Andrew Davidson decide its time to go to America. 1771 Court records show Alex Davidson, John Davison, and Moses Bridges were among the inhabitants of the north part of Orange Co. N.C., who signed a petition to divide the county and the new formation of Caswell County.
1778 Alexander Davidson age 35 moves to Tyron County, N.C. – purchases 225 acres. Ironically this move puts him and his family in the middle of the Southern Campaign on the American Revolution.
1780 June 7th, Alexander Davidson III fights for Libertyon June 20, 1780 near present-day Lincolnton, North Carolina, (less than 10 miles from his home) during the British campaign to gain control of the southern colonies in the American Revolutionary War. About 400 American militia defeated 1,300 Loyalist militiamen. This battle did not involve any regular army forces from either side, and was literally fought between neighbors. Alexander Davidson while serving with the North Carolina Militia, in Captain Vinsant’s Company fought along side his father-in-law Moses Bridges and his two brother-in-laws Thomas and Aaron Bridges. Alexander Davidson was a veteran of American Revolution, he fought with the NC Volunteer Militia in Capt. Vinsant’s Regiment, first at Ramsour’s Mill, then at the Battle of Cowpens and Kings Mountain, all three, were less than 25 miles from his home. Alexander’s name appears on a tax list of North Carolina’s Volunteer Militia.

Elijah Davidson is the youngest of 10 children, Elijah’s mother was Anne Bridges Davidson, she died during Elijah’s childbirth or shortly after from complications arising from his childbirth.
1783 Alexander Davidson serves as Justice of peace on Rutherford County, NC In September: Britain signs the Treaty of Paris, recognizing American independence. November 25: The British evacuate New York, marking the end of British rule, and General George Washington triumphantly returns with the Continental Army.
1783 12. ELIJAH DAVIDSON was born 23 Feb 1783 in Rutherford Co., NC, and died 24 Apr 1870 in North Monmouth, Polk Co., OR. When Elijah was born, the Colonies were still under British rule, and still fighting for their independence. Even though Gen. Cornwallis had surrender at Yorktown just four months earlier, the British troops still occupy Savannah, Georgia, Charleston, South Carolina and they still occupy New York city.
1790 Tax List of Rutherford Co. NC. Alexander is 46 yrs old. Household Census shows 2 males over 16; 4 males under 16. The 2 males over 16 would be the two eldest sons, Alexander and Hezekiah. The four males under 16 would be William, Elijah, Benjamin and Isaac. There are 5 females in the household, there are Mary (Alexander’s wife), Ann, Margaret, Elizabeth and Sarah.
1796 Alexander Davidson, now 52, moves his family through the Cumberland Gap into wilderness of Kentucky and settles just south of Glasgow and establishes the Mt Tabor Baptist Church. It was the very first church in that region of south central Kentucky. The Davidson settlement was called South Fork, it is located 2 miles southwest of Glasgow, taking the name of the large creek, which ran through Alexander’s farm. The homestead would eventually grow to contained seven hundred acres. Rev. Alexander Davidson will also organize many of the first churches in the Green River area, between 1798 to 1804, in what became known as the Green River Baptist Association. By 1804, they had increased to thirty-eight churches, covering a vast territory.
1799 Alexander Davidson age 55, is the elected representative from Barren Co., to Kentucky’s 2nd Constitutional Convention.
1802 Elijah Davidson marries Margaret Murphy, daughter of John Murphy and Rachel Cooke (see Murphy Addendum) on 4th of Feb 1802 in Barren County, Kentucky. Margaret was born on 19 August 1785 in Knox County, Tennessee. She will die in Polk County, Oregon in 1864. On February 4th, 1802, Elijah marries Margaret Murphy in Barren County Kentucky. This wedding ceremony is presided by Rev. Carter Tarrant, instead of his own father. This suggests that there may have been a falling out between Elijah and his father Alexander. By this time, Carter Tarrant a well-known Baptist preacher from Virginia, was already getting a reputation for his somewhat unpopular Abolitionist views. Carter Tarrant will have a huge influence in the life of Elijah, so much so, that in the next three generations in Elijah Davidson’s family lineage, a son will be named after Carter Tarrant Davidson. On October 26th, 1802 Elijah & Margaret’s first born is a son, and they name him Carter Tarrant Davidson.
1805 Elijah Davidson, John Murphy and Carter Tarrant begin working with others, to organize an Emancipation Society called the Friends of Humanity. With eleven preachers and nineteen other church messengers they formed a new church association, called the Licking-Locust Association, which quickly grew to nine new churches, aggregating 190 members in central Kentucky. The Friends of Humanity policy advocated not only the call for immediate abolition but also, non-fellowship with any slaveholders within their own congregations.
1806 - The emancipators met, and consolidated their fraternity into an organized body, under the name of "The Baptized Licking-Locust Association, Friends to Humanity." The Association received its name from that of a church called Licking-Locust, and was considered the mother establishment to the emancipating interest in Kentucky. The first meeting of the Emancipators as a body, they convened to deliberate on the mode of their future proceedings. At this meeting, eleven ministers and nineteen private brethren entered their names as advocates for emancipating principles. Some queries were presented at this Conference: 1. Can any person be admitted a member of this meeting, whose practice appears friendly to perpetual slavery? Answer. We think not. 2. Is there any case in which persons holding slaves may be admitted to membership into a church of Christ? Answer. No; except in the following:
In the case of a person holding young slaves, and recording a deed of their emancipation at such an age as the church to which they offer may agree to.
In the case of persons who have purchased in their ignorance, and are willing that the church shall say when the slaves or slave shall be free.
In the case of women, whose husbands are opposed to emancipation.
In the case of a widow, who has it not in her power to liberate them.
In the case of idiots, old age, or any debility of body that prevents such slave from procuring a sufficient support; and some other cases, which we would wish the churches to be at liberty to judge of, agreeably to the principles of humanity.
3. Shall members in union with us be at liberty in any case to purchase slaves? Answer. No, except it be with a view to ransom them from perpetual slavery, in such a way as the church may approve of. 4. Have our ideas of slavery occasioned any alteration in our view, of the doctrine of the gospel? Answer. No.
On June 12th, in 1806, a young couple was married and they moved into a cabin near Elizabethtown KY., where the husband worked as a carpenter making cabinets, door frames, even coffins. There, Thomas and Nancy joined the Little Mount Separate Baptist Church. A daughter, Sarah, was born to the couple on February 10, 1807. That fall, Thomas and Nancy’s church voted to unite as one of the Emancipating churches of Baptist Licking-Locust Association, Friends to Humanity. In 1808, Thomas and Nancy Lincoln moved to the Sinking Spring Farm on Nolin Creek about three miles from Hodgenville. There, on the morning of Sunday, February 12, 1809, Nancy gave birth to a boy. He was born on a bed of poles covered with corn husks. Peggy Walters, a neighbor who was only 20 years old, assisted with the birth and said "Nancy had about as hard a time as most women, I reckon, easier than some and maybe harder than a few. It came along kind of slow, but everything was regular and all right. The baby was born just about sunup on Sunday morning." That boy, was named Abraham, after his paternal grandfather who had been killed by an Indian attack on his farm in 1786.
Early in the year of 1811, a beautiful comet traveled through the northern celestial hemisphere. It was clearly visible to the naked eye for 260 days, a record it held until the appearance of Comet Hale–Bopp in 1997. This was called the “Great Comet of 1811” and had an exceptionally large coma, perhaps reaching over 1 million miles across—fifty percent larger than the Sun. In October 1811, at its brightest, it displayed an apparent magnitude of “0” (100x that of a normal star), with an easily visible coma. Coincidentally, North America's greatest earthquake sequence struck in the middle of the continent's greatest river, the Mississippi, and the sequence was the New Madrid earthquakes in the winter of 1811-1812. The initial earthquake of scaled magnitude 7.5 to 7.9 on December 16, 1811, followed by a second with a magnitude of 7.4 aftershock on the same day. There were 3 major earthquakes with major aftershocks. The first on December 16, 1811, a magnitude of 7.9, the scond January 23, 1812, a magnitude of 7.6 and the third on February 7, 1812, a magnitude of 8.0. They remain the most powerful earthquakes to hit the contiguous United States east of the Rocky Mountains in recorded history. Alexander Davidson decides it a good time to write his will.

In 1829,Veterans of the War of 1812 begin receiving their 160-acre land warrants in the Illinois Military Tract, a region between the Illinois and Mississippi rivers, in 1829, when the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi ceded lands in northern Illinois by treaty at Prairie du Chien. In 1829, Elijah Davidson and family decide it a good time to leave Kentucky and all it’s slave laws for newly opened lands of western Illinois. A land that is also slave free. They locate on the south side of Cedar creek, which runs to the north of the future town of Monmouth. (See addendum 1.4)
In the Autumn of 1829, Elijah Davidson Sr., William Whitman, Peter Butler and others take claims on the south side of Cedar creek. By this time the entire territory comprised in Warren, Henderson and Merger counties contained only about thirty or forty families; but others were constantly coming, so that by the spring of the latter year it was thought proper to send to Peoria and secure an order for a county election. Within one year later, census shows 830 persons in three counties. Elijah Davidson builds one of the first four cabins built in Monmouth. He owned a cabin and a blacksmith shop.
1831On February 12, "an act to incorporate the inhabitants of Monmouth” was publicly posted to call "the male citizens of the town of Monmouth" to meet at the school house. It was organized by calling Elijah Davidson to be chair for voting to incorporate the town of Monmouth. Twenty-three votes were cast in favor of the incorporation and none against.
1831 Elijah Davidson is appointed pastor of the Christian Church establish at Cold Brook – east of Monmouth. “On the 30th day of April, 1831. The Cold Brook congregation calls itself "the church of Christ on Cedar Fork of Henderson River. The first group met originally in members' houses, the courthouse, and a hallway of a downtown building. Elijah also served as the County Treasurer. C1832As the white population in the region grows, so do the tensions with the Native American population. Chief Black Hawk leads a group of Native Americans back east across the Mississippi River to reclaim land previously ceded to the US Government. In the spring of 1832, and the citizens of Monmouth’s crops barely planted, news of an Indian war arrives, less than 60 miles away. Black Hawk and his band were on the warpath and Black Hawk's band has defeated a local militia at the Battle of Stillman's Run. Elijah Barton Davidson Jr. joins the Illinois militia to fight in the Black Hawk War, as does another young man named Abe Lincoln.
1841 June 16, Elijah Davidson Sr., deeded land on the southwest corner of East Archer and North Second Streets to the Church. A frame building was erected for $800. The Talbot Creek Church was formed in the northeast corner of Monmouth Township at the home of William Hopper, March 3, of forty-three members, most of whom were of the mother congregation and five miles northeast of it. Some of the ministers who resided near the Talbot Creek congregation and were members of it were S. L. and Thomas Wallace, John E. and Joseph E. Murphy and F. M. Bruner. In 1845 the congregation built a small frame chapel. Also, in 1841, Latter Day Saint movement founder Joseph Smith appeared before the Judge Stephen A. Douglas in an extradition hearing held at Monmouth's Warren County courthouse. The hearing, which was to determine whether Smith should be returned to Missouri to face murder charges, He was released because his arrest was ruled invalid.
1848The men and women of the church of Christ in Monmouth, led by Elijah Davidson and Squire Whitman and Elijah Butler, begin meeting with the purpose to establish a learning institution in the Oregon Territory "where men and women, alike, may become schooled in the science of living and in the fundamental principles of religion."
Gunfighter Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp was born in 1848 in Monmouth, Illinois, the third of five sons born to Nicholas and Virginia Ann Earp,
1850Quote from The Monmouth Atlas, printed April 5, 1850: “On Friday last, ten teams taking with them 39 persons left for Oregon. Elijah Davidson, 67 years and an early settler of this county was with them. He was a pioneer here from Kentucky and now takes family, including numerous grandchildren and is bound for the Pacific.” The provisional government allotted 640 acres of fertile Oregon farmland to every male citizen willing to relocate to the Oregon territory. The Emigrants had three major fears—Indians, disease, and the weather. It is estimated that 34,000 emigrants died along the Oregon Trail — averaging 17 deaths per mile. The Oregon Trail extended from the Missouri River to the Willamette River and was used by nearly 400,000 people. It crossed nearly 2,000 miles of plains, deserts, canyons, and mountains, so unfamiliar and inhospitable that it was dangerous to pause, and unthinkable to settle. It was a six months' journey which had to begin in early May in order to avoid being trapped by mountain snowstorms.

1850 Autumn, At nearly 68 yrs. old, Elijah Davidson and family crossed the plains by ox team from Monmouth, Illinois, halting in the center of present-day Laurelhurst, suburb of Portland, there they took up a 160 acre donation claim. But, Portland was a wild and hard drinking town of pioneers, prostitutes and gold prospectors, not very ideal for Christian family living. Elijah sold the donation claim for the sum of $500, moved southward into the Willamette Valley to found a new town and build a Christian college. This great green bowl, encircled by mountainous walls, was more like the "Oregon" they expected to find. "Its sheltered situation, embosomed in mountains, renders it good pasturing ground in the winter time; when the elk come down to it in great numbers, driven out of the mountains by the snow. The Indians then resort to it to hunt. They likewise come to it in the summer to dig the camash root, of which it produces immense quantities. When this plant is in blossom, the whole valley is tinted by its blue flowers, and looks like the ocean when overcast by a cloud."
1852-53 Founding of Monmouth, Oregon Elijah Davidson, Squire S. Whitman, William Murphy and Thomas Lucas, took adjoining claims in Polk County. The site for the town of Monmouth was land donated entirely by Christian Church men.
1854William Murphy, Elijah B Davidson, Squire Whitman, Thomas Lucas and J. B. Smith donate 640 acres of land for a town. A vote is taken to decide on the name of the town. The choices are Cincinnati, Dover and Monmouth. A tie results between Dover and Monmouth, and Ira F. M. Butler, the chairman of the town committee, casts the deciding vote for Monmouth.
1856July, Elijah organizes a 'Christian congregation; the Bible the only infallible rule of faith and practice. ' Among the charter members were Elijah Davidson, John E. Murphy, Albert Lucas, Squire S. Whitman and others. Monmouth University is founded. Forty life scholarships are issued at $500 each. A small grammar school building, 20 feet by 10 feet, was built on a corner of the public square. The Christian church shared the use of the building.
1859 Elijah Davidson Sr., was a devout advocate of prohibition. In February 1859, Davidson and other trustees efforts to prohibit the importation, exportation, sale, and consumption of alcohol in Monmouth became a reality. One of the main arguments Davidson and his fellow religious supporters used to push prohibition legislation was, "to enable them to suppress and prevent nuisances, to render the possession of life and property more secure, and to enable them to improve and embellish the streets of the town." On April 1, 1997: The college changed it’s name to Western Oregon University. 143 years later, Monmouth was still a dry town that banned the sale of alcoholic beverages in supermarkets, restaurants and bars. But, in the November 2002 election, Monmouth's status as the last dry town on the west coast ended.

From the open source book, "The Centennial History of Oregon, 1811-1912 ", vol. II, page 888, S.J. Clarks Publishing Co., 1912 “CARTER T. DAVIDSON is one of the successful sons of Oregon who has made a business of mining and farming. He lives in Provolt, Jackson, Oregon. where he is well and favorably known. His birth occurred in Polk county, Oregon, on the 24th of Mar 1859. His parents were Elijah B. and Saloma (Jones) Davidson, both of whom were natives of Kentucky. In 1850 they crossed the plains with ox teams to Oregon and in that state they reared their family of twelve children. Carter T. Davidson received a good common school education and remained at home until his twenty-first year. He then started out on his own account, choosing the life of an agriculturist and miner, vocations which he has since followed with a reasonable degree of success. He was diligent in his business and for the most part fortune smiled upon him in his efforts to unearth the hidden treasures which he sought as a miner. In 1884, Mr. Davidson was united in marriage to Miss Cecilia Ann Bailey, a native of Oregon, and to this union were born seven children, all of whom are now living except Lester. Those who survive are, Chester Clyde, Jennie Eva, Ellis Jax, Estelle Hazel, Carter Emerson and Iris Thelta Davidson. In his political views Mr. Davidson is a republican but he devotes little time to public matters, preferring to occupy himself with his business affairs and the care of his family. Having been born in Oregon and being used to the life of toil which is exacted of those who follow the vocations which he chose, he has been familiar with pioneer experiences and knows by actual contact with them the many disadvantages, privations and the strenuous life incident to his calling in a new country. In the community of which he is a member he has long been regarded as one of its substantial and leading citizens, and his reputation for integrity, industry and general ability is well founded. As a solid, substantial citizen he is a valued member of society and the family is held in high esteem by all who know them.” From the open source book, "The Centennial History of Oregon, 1811-1912 ", vol. 1870 April 24, ELIJAH DAVIDSON Sr., dies. Born in 1782 Elijah was an abolitionist, veteran of the Battle of New Orleans, pioneer preacher, organizer of multiple churches of Christ, city father to two different towns, died 24 Apr 1870 in Monmouth, Polk County, Oregon.
1874Nov., Elijah Jones Davidson (Granndson of Elijah Sr.,) was on a hunting trip with his brothers near Sand Mountain (now renamed Mount Elijah) after Davidson became the first man known to have entered the hallowed walls of Oregon Caves. Oregon Caves has passages totaling about 15,000 feet (4,600 m), formed in marble. He entered in pursuit of his favorite dog Bruno and a bear in late November of 1874. After chasing the bear and his dog into the cave, Elijah Davidson was lost in utter darkness as his last match goes out deep inside. Known to have been a small man in stature standing only 5 feet 5 inches was it just sheer drive, determination, fear, plain bravery, or stupidity that led to his predicament?
1877The cave remained silent until May of 1877 when his younger brother Carter Tarent Davidson convinces him to explore the cave deeper with more light and supplies. Elijah brought his brother Carter, and friends William Fidler (brother of Mary Louisa Fidler Jordan and Uncle to Roy A. Jordan), James Nail, Ira Sparlin, and David Johns along, and they began to go deeper and deeper under the mountain. After many hours of exploration, they reached a solid wall and believed it was the end of the cave.
